John Shuster, Jason Smith, Jeff Isaacson, and John Benton gave Germany’s Andy Kapp a few headscratchers, but came up short in the end. Shooting percentages were almost identical, but Team USA needed to steal two in the tenth end for a tie and the Germans were having none of it.
Shuster and his team take on Norway tonight. (Yes, Norway– the ones with the pants.) In the first draw Norway had surprisingly narrow loss to Canada in an extra end. Good curling, and Go Team USA!
The cold spell that has been plaguing the Twin Ports this week is supposed to break this weekend, with temperatures breaking into positive territory on saturday. A welcome development indeed. So, what’s going on this weekend?
Tonight at 6pm at the Duluth Curling Club, the second fun ’spiel of the season will be held. This event is open to all adults and all skill levels, so if you have friends who are interested in trying out the greatest sport in town, bring them down. Ken and Joanne Docteur are hosting the event, which begins with a little curling, then switches to the lounge for some socializing and live entertainment (Marty = Party). (There is also a hockey game at the DECC tonight. My alma mater takes on the Bulldogs– hopefully this matchup will be a conference game in future seasons!)
The Minnesota State Mens and Womens Championships are underway down south at the St. Paul Curling Club. So far Seppo Sormunen’s rink is undefeated; no standings for the women are posted yet but its a safe bet that Norma O’Leary is fielding a very competitive team.
2006 Olympic gold medalist Brad Gushue has a series of commercials for a Canadian product called Maple Leaf cocktail wieners, and they are pretty funny. (Or is it funny that a company actually still sells cocktail wieners?) Anyway the best part about this promotion is that you can enter a contest to win a personal training session with Team Gushue.
Here is the link for the details about the contest, and the first video is below. You can see all three videos at this link.
The Duluth Curling Club is open for business. Sheets are available for practice now, and league curling begins this thursday. I threw rocks for an hour or so this afternoon before the open house, and the ice was frosty and swingy. Can’t wait for the action to begin!
League registration at the Duluth Curling Club opens today, October 2, and closes October 16.
How much curling is reasonable? Would it be possible to curl three nights a week, or is two enough? Or, two plus the one on one league? There are so many possibilities to contemplate.
